If you plan to use your image in a print document such as a newsletter, you should scan your image at 200-300 dpi or higher, but note that you will get a much larger file at these high resolutions. A good practice is to scan your pictures at the highest resolution you can, then use an image editing application to save a copy at a lower resolution.
The size of a scanned document depends on what the scanner it set to. Scan mode & DPI affect the file sizes Some scan modes: color, gray-scale and black and white. 16-bit Color, 300 DPI will look great but create huge JPG and PDF files. Black and white at 100 DPI will be grainy but create very small files.
If we scan at 300 dpi, the carriage moves eight motor steps at a time vertically, then stops and samples, and resamples the scan line to 1/4 size horizontally, to create the 300x300 dpi image requested. If scanning at say 250 dpi, it should move 2400/250 = 9.6 steps per row, but it can only move 10 steps on some rows, and 9 steps on others.

Usually the best dpi for scanning documents – balancing readability and file size – is 300 dpi. It makes the document easy to read and share. Also, font size can affect the dpi you choose. Standard font sizes, 10-point and up, are fine at 300 dpi.
An example: you want to print a photo sized 4 by 5 inch the same size. Than you have to scan it at 300 dpi. If you wish to print it at 8 by 10, you’ll have to scan at 600 dpi, the print will be 300 dpi. The question is, can your device manage it, it makes great demands on the memory. But essentially this is the way it has to be done.
USA. 600DPI is usually sufficient. 1200 will get you incredibily large files, especially if the source photo is large. 300DPI is usually more than enough for larger scans, like 8x10 inch. A really high DPI will result in an oversize picture which you may have to shrink to fit, so not much is gained. Quote.

However, editors do often ask for 300 dpi (the theory being that it is better to have too many pixels than too few). If scanning for an imagesetter to create a screen for magazine publication, the lpi formula above is very valid. Magazines 133/150 lpi - scale to 225 to 300 dpi.
